Social Security Number Check
Identity theft is at an all-time high in the United States, and it often crosses paths with illegal immigration or fraud. People who aren’t technically qualified to work may use another person’s identity and Social Security Number (SSN) in an attempt to defraud employers into hiring them. If they are successful, the consequences could range from poor performance on the part of the employee to a business owner being charged for employing an illegal alien.
At IMI Data Search, we believe a Social Security Number Check is the first step in mitigating negligent hiring risks. Identity matching alleviates identity theft concerns while also ensuring that the person you hire can legally work in the United States. Without a Social Security Number Check and proper identity verification, anything else revealed on a background check may or may not be accurate.
What is a Social Security Number Check?
A Social Security Number Check screens your candidate’s provided SSN against a variety of databases belonging to the U.S. Government. Search results confirm not only the number itself, but also the individual’s name and previous address history. Employers use this information to ensure that the individual they hire is really who they say they are.
IMI Data Search’s SSN Checks utilize a combination of resources including state databases, federal databases, and non-organization resources. Our power platform guides you through all required compliance. This includes gaining consent and i-9 information gathering within the employee’s first three days of work.
When you order a Social Security Number Check, we start by verifying the information against the Social Security Number Verification Service. We also cross-check SSNs against the Consent Based Social Security Number Verification Service. In many cases, this process completes within a matter of minutes successfully.
For employers who require a higher level of confirmation, we provide access to E-Verify through our E-Verify partnership.
An E-Verify Partner
IMI Data Search is proud to partner with the powerful E-Verify platform, a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. This system compares information from an employee’s Form I-9 against government-retained tax and identity data to reveal if a candidate is legally permitted to work in the United States. E-Verify is sanctioned under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA). It is the single-most frequently updated SSN and identity database available in the United States. It is also your most reliable source of information.
E-Verify is not available to the general public; only E-Verify partners can search the database for registration. Not every business meets the criteria to partner with E-Verify, leaving some recruiters out in the cold. At IMI-Data Search, we provide you with access to the system through our partnership irrespective of your own business eligibility.
Although E-Verify’s main benefit is in revealing work eligibility, the database can also reveal other mission-critical information upon running a Social Security Number Check. If candidates provide a Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, a Form I-766 Employment Authorization Document, or a US Passport or Passport Card, E-Verify will also display a photo for instant comparison. This step alleviates stolen passport and identity issues.
If E-Verify red flags an account for issues, and the candidate declares it to be an error (e.g., a visa lapse), you have options. The system gives employers and candidates up to eight days to correct the problem and submit documents showing proof of the error.
Who Needs Social Security Number Checks?
IMI Data Search recommends that all employers screen every candidate to the fullest extent permissible by law before hiring – including a Social Security Number Check. Screening is an important part of risk mitigation for businesses in every industry found on home soil (and beyond).
Some businesses may naturally have a higher risk for candidate fraud than others, especially when it comes to SSN falsification. Businesses hiring individuals who fall under these categories should always screen for SSN matches:
- Temporary or seasonal workers
- Day laborers and construction workers
- Foreign students seeking local work
- Permanent residents
- Temporary residents
Individuals who belong to these categories have a higher risk for lapsed permission to work in the United States. If you hire them despite their ineligibility, you could be fined, charged, or even sued. You have the right to refuse to hire if someone is ineligible to work. Hiring the individual could also trigger a government investigation that leads to deportation.
Tempted to overlook ineligibility in an attempt to help struggling immigrants? Don’t do this! In almost all cases, it causes more harm than good. There are better ways to aid struggling immigrants, including filing a legal application to work.
Why You Need Social Security Number Checks
It is illegal to employ someone who is ineligible to work in the United States. You should screen for SSN matches and work eligibility because it protects you from costly negligent hiring lawsuits, fines, charges, liability lawsuits, and federal investigations. If you avoid paying taxes and contributions for an illegal worker, you could also find yourself indicted for tax fraud and evasion.
A Social Security Number Check also eliminates risks like identity theft. When you screen an SSN with IMI Data Search, you prevent con artists and fraudsters from gaining access to your business. In some cases, this may also prevent inventory loss, theft, fraud, and PR disasters.
A Social Security Number Check is an important part of any risk mitigation procedure. If a prospective candidate lies about their SSN, they will most likely lie about other information, too. This includes qualifications, education, or even past employment. You should include an SSN Search with any in-depth screening measure.
